DAR ES SALAAM MARITIME INSTITUTE (DMI) RELOCATION TO A NEW SITE
As part of our commitment to providing a national-class maritime safety and security in Tanzania, DMI relocation to a new site marks an exciting milestone in our journey and offers enhanced amenities for our growing team. A move to a new site will directly support our expansion and providing the necessary space to scale our operations and meet increasing demand. Relocating to a new, larger facility will allows DMI to significantly increase our engagement capacities and better accommodate of our growing stakeholders to ensuring we continue to provide top-tier service to our partners.
On the other hand expanding the Port of Dar es Salaam will be essential to cement Tanzania’s status as a premier regional logistic hub to landlocked neighbors. The relocation of the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) to a new site in Kimbiji, Kigamboni District, is a strategic move driven by the need for infrastructure expansion, improved training capabilities, and the logistical expansion of the Port of Dar es Salaam. Key reasons and importance of the relocation of DMI and expansion of Dar es Salaam port include:
- Improved Operation Efficiency
The relocation will allow DMI to upgrade its training equipment and provide a better, more modern environment for both staff and students to addressing existing limitation on operational efficiency.
- Expanding Education Capacity
The improved and larger campus will allow DMI to accommodate a growing number of students and enhance the quality of its maritime training programs.
- Port Expansion and Economic growth
The current premises of DMI are slated for redevelopment by the Tanzania Port Authority (TPA) into a new, modern cargo-handling berth which will be crucial for expanding the capacity of the Port of Dar es Salaam, thereby enhancing national transport and trade logistic.
- Upgrading Training Infrastructure
The new Kimbiji site provides a larger 13-acre area, which will allow for the construction of modern facilities, replacing the current cramped and aging infrastructures to elevating the learning environment for maritime students.
Due to the construction of a modern berth which aimed at expanding the capacity of the Port of Dar es Salaam, the URT government has officially announced plans to relocate the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) to a new site in Kimbiji, Kigamboni District.
A new site in Kimbiji will be built with modern facilities to accommodate the growing number of students and improve the learning environment as the relocation is intended to provide the maritime training institution with adequate space and modern infrastructure to match its regional importance.
The Minister for Transport, Makame Mbarawa explained that the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) will take over the land currently occupied by the institute and finance the construction of a new and spacious campus at Kimbiji.
The Centre for Maritime Safety and Security in Tanzania appreciate all the efforts made by the government which has already allocated 1.09 billion for the 2025/2026 financial year to support this transition, with a significant portion dedicated specifically to the development of the new DMI facilities in Kimbiji.
